Abstract
‘Data protection’ explains how the collection of personal information — both by government and by private institutions — has increased with the growth of the service industry. It examines concerns about the computerisation of this data and the potential for misuse or loss. The principles of data protection are explained, at the heart of which is the principle that data should be collected by means that are lawful and fair in the circumstances of the case. The current data-protection regime is shown to be problematic when data is transferred across national borders; it is also ill-equipped to cope with the challenges to privacy posed by the Internet.
