Abstract
This chapter discusses some of the pervasive themes in the Russian religious and spiritual traditions: the idea that the Kingdom of God will come on earth; the richness of the inner life, as seen in Hesychasm; the idea of Russia as Third Rome. A section of the chapter focuses on the lives and works of two major Russian saints: Sergius, the founder of monasteries; and Seraphim, the illuminator. Attention is also drawn to elements of pagan spirituality that reappear in Christian and later in Cosmist form.
