1 Terrorists and Their Beliefs

Abstract
Chapter 1 introduces my approach, embeds it in the existing literature, and argues that in order to understand what drove young men and women in the Netherlands and Indonesia to become terrorists in the last decade, we need to take their beliefs seriously. It therefore advocates a first-person perspective approach to extreme belief and behavior. In addition, the chapter explains the hybrid approach of combining history, religious studies, and social psychology in developing a design for identifying narratives of radical redemption. Finally, it presents my main research question: To what extent does the radical redemption narrative shape radicalization toward terrorism? This question can be divided in three subquestions: (1) How does terrorism manifest itself as a praxis of radical redemption? (2) How does the redemption narrative offer individuals a framework within which they can give their lives meaning? (3) At what point and why does this narrative lose its appeal?
