Abstract
This chapter presents Andrew Johnson’s Inaugural Address upon assuming the office of president of the United States. It mentions the notion of rebellion that must be regarded as a guarantee of the future. The speech includes Johnson’s determination to establish and perpetuate the principles of free government, which is the foundation of his political creed. Johnson believes that the government, in passing through its present perils, will settle down upon principles consonant with popular rights more permanent and enduring. In his address, Johnson also asked listeners to rely on oneself and others in carrying the government through its present perils.
