With grateful acknowledgment, I want to recognize two publications where earlier versions of some of the ideas presented in this book appeared. Earlier versions of parts of this book appeared as “Zen and the Art of Democracy: Contemplative Practice as Ordinary Political Theory,” in Political Theory: An International Journal of Political Philosophy 48, no. 4 (2019). Additionally, earlier versions of parts of Chapter 4 appeared as “Adorno’s Democratic Modernism in America: Leaders and Educators as Political Artists,” in The Blackwell Companion to Adorno, edited by Peter Gordon, Espen Hammer, and Max Pensky (Hoboken, NJ: Wiley Blackwell, 2020).
Writing this book was unlike any other scholarly project I’ve undertaken. While drafting the book, I felt like I could write only at the same pace as my personal insights into contemplative practice unfolded. This was a book that was crafted to intentionally intersect with lived experience, demanding a balance between intellectual insight and embodied perception. Writing this book also transformed my understanding of political theory and how to practice that art in other dimensions of life. Additionally, this was the first book I wrote, from start to finish, as a mother. Having a child impacted the process of writing as well as the content of what I wanted to write about. Motherhood raised the stakes of how I approached contemplative practice and the finite yet infinite work of attention and attending: my son made me newly aware of the vital importance of embodied presence. This book was also woven together at the pace of motherhood, with lots of challenging but ultimately valuable interruptions that gave new ideas time to sink in and be tested out on the ground of everyday life. All of this took a while. All of this involved many valuable kinds of support from different people who I am happy to now have the chance to acknowledge.
