Abstract
The chapter “Reception History” examines the advertising and promotion of Singin’ in the Rain at its premiere, competition from other entertainments, and subsequent reviews. Selections from seven decades of criticism and scholarship document the film’s rise to prominence. Takeoffs and remixes by contemporary artists display a range of responses to the work. Reinterpretations by Stanley Kubrick, Michael Jackson, BTS, and contemporary hip hop performers like Dreya Mac among others suggest that the film is becoming a referential resource for reinventions of the styles and forms of mediated musical dance and drama.
