Ready, Jonathan L., 'Book 13', in Jonathan L. Ready (ed.), Oxford Critical Guide to Homer's Iliad (Oxford , 2024; online edn, Oxford Academic, 18 July 2024), https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198869870.003.0014, accessed 4 May 2025.
Abstract
Book 12 ends with the Achaeans in flight from Hector as he breaks through the wall surrounding their encampment. Poseidon’s machinations in book 13 reverse for a moment what looks like an imminent Trojan victory. Under the category of themes, this chapter discusses epiphanies, the warriors’ relative status, and their insulting speeches. It then considers Trojan guilt, the characterization of Hector and of Zeus, and vividness. Under the category of poetics, it discusses epic retardation, type scenes, the construction of minor characters, and Homeric nods (apparent errors on the part of the poet).
Keywords:
epic retardation, epiphany, Hector, Homeric nods, insults, minor characters, status, type scenes, vividness, Zeus
