Abstract
While all research designs have similar foundational components, research designs for interpretive projects include additional features and challenges that must be properly addressed and accounted for. Interpretive researchers not only grapple with how to articulate their concepts and research questions clearly while still allowing room for maximum theoretical and logistical flexibility, they must also hone their communication skills to ensure that their unique approaches are properly supported. This chapter examines designing and completing interpretive research projects in peacebuilding and international relations to highlight some of the key features and challenges of an interpretive research design. It summarizes the central epistemological assumptions and approaches of interpretive research, explains how those perspectives shape the research design, and discusses potential challenges of creating a research design for interpretive research and how to address those difficulties.
