The inspiration for writing this book came from many years teaching a course on Alexander the Great to students in the Department of Classics in King’s College London. I have learned a great deal from them, and I hope that they will appreciate the results. The course was usually co-taught with Dr Lindsay Allen, who opened my eyes to the importance of the Near Eastern material. I am particularly grateful to her, and to all my colleagues at King’s. I have learned much also from colleagues with whom I have discussed Alexander at conferences and lectures across the world, including Sulochana Asirvatham, Elizabeth Baynham, Philip Bosman, Brian Bosworth, Peter Green, Waldemar Heckel, Tim Howe, Robin Lane Fox, Sabine Müller, Daniel Ogden, Frances Pownall, Joseph Roisman, Andrew Stewart, Richard Stoneman, Pat Wheatley, Josef Wiesehöfer, and Ian Worthington. Most of the writing was done while I was Margot Tytus Fellow in the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati: I am grateful for the wonderful generosity and hospitality of the faculty and staff there. Thanks are due to all those at Oxford University Press involved in the production of the book, including Carol Carnegie, Kay Clement, Carrie Hickman, Andrea Keegan, Emma Ma, Joy Mellor, and Subramaniam Vengatakrishnan. Finally, as always, I want to acknowledge the support of my family—my wife Jill and my daughters, to whom this book is dedicated.
