Abstract
Chapter synopsis: This chapter addresses the various policy ecosystems that are in place when our aim is to address community education. Public policy and its support for life span engagement is one consideration. Educational policy and the location and delivery structures for programs is another. Curricular policy regarding what content, for whom, and in what ways they will be delivered is discussed, as are organizational policies that structure non-profits. The chapter also focuses on the personal implications of policy, arguing that community music workers often find themselves in spaces that lack formalized policy stipulations and standards. The chapter provides examples of how policy can function in multiple ways, from directed via government mandates to indirect via funding agencies or organizations, and how policy can be directed/influenced by many players.
