Abstract

Clinical trials are medical experiments on humans and are used to improve healthcare. This book provides a short and accessible introduction to the history, principles, and practices of clinical trials. It presents the why, what, when, and how of clinical trials. Furthermore, it makes clinical trials and the thinking behind them accessible to a wide audience. The book begins with an introduction to the history and development of modern clinical trials. Subsequent chapters address trial design, randomisation, how to choose the sample size, setting the study up, running the study including recruitment and data collection and monitoring, conducting the statistical analysis, and finally the reporting and dissemination of the study findings.
