i have been extremely fortunate to be supported in many ways, by both institutions and individuals, in the writing of this book. Credit for the idea for this book goes to my friend and graduate-student colleague Vincent Ryan, who many years ago suggested I write a monograph on Belisarius. The research and writing of this book would have been impossible without the steadfast support of my institution, Indiana University Northwest. The combination of a travel fellowship and sabbatical leave in Spring 2020 allowed me to conduct research in Rome, which was sadly cut short by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. I also received from my university additional research funding in Summer 2021, which allowed me to complete the majority of the writing. I am enormously grateful for the support I have received from Indiana University, which values the research of its faculty. As this book came together, I was blessed to have many of my historian colleagues read portions or the entirety of the manuscript and offer suggestions. I would like to particularly thank Michael Stewart, Conor Whately, Christopher Lillington-Martin, Geoffrey Greatrex, and Michael Bonner for their time and expertise. I also benefited from the passion and insight of other acquaintances interested in Belisarius and Antonina, including Toby Groom of Epic History TV and John Yelland of Judicator. I am sincerely grateful for the assistance of my editor at Oxford, Stefan Vranka, and the comments of the anonymous reviewers of both the proposal and manuscript. Finally, I am so appreciative of my wife, Bethany, who has been supportive of her academic spouse for more than ten years now. Authors write about what they know. Who is to say how much of my decision to write a book about a married couple was inspired by my own marriage? This book is dedicated to her.
