Abstract
In the fall of 2018, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s celebrated conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, star architect Frank Gehry, the orchestra’s board chair and philanthropist Thomas Beckmen, Inglewood mayor James Butts, and other local luminaries unveiled plans for a new concert hall, the Beckmen YOLA Center, in the heart of Inglewood. Attendees touted the state-of-the-art building as a sign of the success of Los Angeles Philharmonic’s youth orchestra program and a proof of the impact of classical music outreach programs in underserved—and in this particular case, predominantly black and brown—neighborhoods. This chapter situates this gift within the expanding sphere of neoliberal philanthropy, particularly in the arts for social change sector, and global discourses of classical music and “starchitecture” as saviors of distressed communities. The author weighs the actual costs and benefits of neoliberal philanthropy, interrogates who really benefits from starchitecture like the Beckmen YOLA center, and unpacks the neocolonialist subtext that underlies much of this recent wave of classical music social programs.
