This book would not have been written without the help and encouragement of two people: Eric Edelman and Seth Center. As I note in my Preface, Eric connected me to many key officials in the Bush administration. As I completed chapters, Eric read each one, offered incisive comments, and provided additional information. Although we still disagree on many issues of interpretation, his thoughtfulness and knowledge have enriched my understanding of the complexities of decision-making inside the Bush administration.
Seth was a graduate student at the University of Virginia whose work I supervised. He assisted me with some research when I began writing about the Bush administration. Subsequently, he went to work in the Historical Office of the Department of State and convinced its leaders to do a special project on the Iraq War. For several years, Seth conducted research and assembled documents. He shared none of this with me. His involvement, however, sustained my own interest, and his queries and comments constantly moved me forward. When I wavered in my conviction to write a book, he hassled and prodded. I suspect he will not agree with aspects of this volume, but he made it come to fruition. I am indebted to him.
