This main ideas in this book are ones I’ve been thinking through for nearly a decade. In that time, I’ve talked to dozens of people about them, and in almost every case, learned something important. It is doubtful that I will remember everyone who has had a hand in helping me develop and refine these ideas, but I am deeply grateful for the help all the same. This book would not exist without the significant support I’ve received from so many wonderful philosophers. Nor would it exist without the love of my wife Stephanie and our daughters, Pearl and Irene.
Versions of Chapters 3, 7, and 8 were presented at Georgia State University, Rice University, and the Texas Ethics Workshop at Texas Christian University, and I am appreciative of the feedback I received at these venues from Jessica Berry, Gwen Bradford, Amy Floweree, Alida Liberman, Eddy Nahmias, Tim O’Keefe, Jeremy Sakovich, Timothy Schroeder, and George Sher. I am also thankful to Sarah Buss, John Martin Fischer, Samantha Matherne, Neal Tognazzini, and two anonymous referees who commented on the paper “A Wholehearted Defense of Ambivalence,” which overlaps significantly with parts of Chapters 2 and 3 of this book. So too, I appreciate the extremely helpful feedback I received from two anonymous referees and my editor, Peter Ohlin, for his help in shepherding the manuscript to completion.
