Abstract
Raising a child is infinitely complicated and is made more so by the rate of change in the world around us. What do modern families need from their relationships? How parents and children bond and regulate their emotions is described. The importance of touch and the meaning of touch as a form of communication are explored. The chapter reviews current understanding of how early-life experiences affect the trajectory of our lives, including brain development and understanding of ourselves. Finally, the chapter looks more deeply at what modern parents need, not just children, and concludes that parents are still developing and that spanking is not good for them either.
