English titles are generally used for patristic and other primary sources except where the Greek or Latin is deemed more familiar. Abbreviated forms of titles are given in the bibliography in square brackets under the relevant author. Page references to critical editions are given where available with some exceptions for in-text citations for reasons of economy. I have not generally offered transliteration for Russian titles cited in the footnotes but gloss them in the bibliography. I have maintained the old Russian orthography for pre-Revolutionary and diaspora works.
In a work of this scope, is has proved necessary to consult widely among translations in various languages. Where translations in the text have been drawn or modified from existing English translations this is indicated by the abbreviation ‘ET’, either in the footnotes or the bibliography. I should like to offer a general thanks to the noble scholars of the Ante- and Post-Nicene Fathers series whom I have made use of more times than I can properly enumerate. I first began reading Bulgakov largely in French back in the 1990s thanks to the stellar labours of Constantin Andronikof. More recently, I have been most grateful for the rising tide of Sophiological works translated by Boris Jakim, Thomas Allan Smith, and many others. Works of the Sophiologists are referenced in accordance with the original Russian version (or other language edition, if earlier) together with the corresponding reference in the English translation, where available (again flagged as ‘ET’). These and all other translations have frequently been adapted to a greater or lesser degree according to my own lights.
