Abstract
The last, ‘History’ part studies the historical context of the creation of the Novgorod Sophia iconography by arguing that its creation was a Novgorodian response to the union of the Catholic and Orthodox churches signed in Florence in 1439. The historical exploration begins with an outline of the fifteenth-century history of Novgorod and, in particular, the city’s reaction to the Union of Florence. It is followed by the analysis of two letters of Vasilii II, the grand prince of Moscow (from 1441 and 1451), in which the Russian ruler in the name of the Rus Church rejects the church union with the Latins. These texts, which de facto also announced the jurisdictional independence of the Rus Church from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, convey a novel Russian ecclesiology which is based not on the Byzantine idea of five equal Patriarchates (Pentarchy), but on the concept of Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia is the symbol of the true faith, the opposition to the Latins, and the succession between the Byzantine and Rus Churches, respectively. It is this idea of Hagia Sophia which is expressed visually and verbally by the ‘sophiological synthesis’ of the Novgorod Sophia icon and its commentary.
