Abstract
Singing is a robust act. Songs that energize can invigorate stu-dents for a brain break. An entire student body’s singing of the national anthem changes the atmosphere and transforms the singers. “If singing can foster positive human interaction, maybe that is reason enough for us to engage in it” Both teachers who are confident with their voices and those who are not can learn the ambiance-changing power of song in their classrooms. Many of us pull back from the idea of singing with our students. We think we don’t have a good voice, that we can’t sing, that students may laugh at us. Music educators, however, will tell you that the best way to get better at singing is to sing. Notice how your breath and throat adjust with each pitch as you sing melodies. That is sing-ing. Those of us who are saddled with the notion that we can-not sing were most likely told that by someone, perhaps even decades ago. it’s time to debunk those life-limiting messages! We can’t learn to jog without jogging. We can’t learn to sing without singing. Recordings can help support singers and encourage them to sing along. Ask your music teacher for pointers on how to increase your singing range and confidence. He/ she can also recommend some tried-and-true songs that have school-appropriate lyrics. What kind of music should you sing with your students? Calming and energizing music. Popular music and oldies. Seasonal music and favorite standards. Accompanied and unac-companied songs. Movie and television themes. Music that prompts dance moves and music that elicits simple gestures. Sing it all. The ambiance of singing is real. We feel the breath. We feel the connections. We feel absorbed as we join, full-voiced, in singing with our students. Singing can become a powerful, contributing influence in schools. See if you agree. Be bold. Sing. Singing is infinitely better than yelling. It gives young and old a feeling of security– if not of amusement. Anyone can do it. Everyone should experience what a difference singing makes.
