In dealing with molecular properties and intermodular forces and their effect on fluid properties we shall be concerned almost entirely with electrostatics; electromagnetic forces and macroscopic circuit problems play only a very minor role. We have therefore found it convenient to use the electrostatic system of units rather than the rationalized Systeme International (SI)† in our treatment of these topics (particularly in Chapters 2 and 10, and in Appendices C and D). In Chapter 11 we use the Gaussian system (which derives naturally from the esu system) when dealing with light absorption and scattering. This makes for a more compact notation, since the factors of 4ire0 that occur in the SI system are avoided. In Appendix D.3 the relations among the electrostatic (esu), SI, and atomic units (au) systems are discussed in some detail.
