Abstract
Cancer is a devastating and burdensome disease affecting all aspects of patients’ and their families’ lives. Patients with cancer are subjected to various types of treatment modules including, but not limited to, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy. Such treatments cause many annoying and difficult-to-treat symptoms that may also result from the disease itself. For the past few decades, cancer treatments have remained focused mainly on the physical aspects of disease, with less attention paid to the psychological and emotional dimensions of the cancer experience. Psychological aspects are usually compromised by the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The most common psychological disorders experienced by cancer patients include adjustment disorders, anxiety, and depression. To manage any of these disorders, screening is a crucial step in clinical practice in oncology. Then, at-risk patients need to be subject to a full assessment interview to set up a care plan and start treatment, either pharmacological or nonpharmacological. This chapter highlights the importance of considering cultural issues when planning psychological care for patients with cancer and presents a suggested framework for managing psychological disorders in clinical practice.
