Chapters of this book have been presented to academic audiences in Australia, Japan, the US, and Europe, and I have had the opportunity to discuss the material informally with many thoughtful people over the last few years. I am grateful to everybody that listened and offered comments and criticisms along the way, including: Andrew Alexandra, Peter Balint, Ed Barrett, Tony Coady, Toni Erskine, Christopher Finlay, Tom Frame, Luke Glanville, Marcus Hedahl, Adam Henschke, Roger Herbert, Joshua Kassner, Brent Kyle, Judith Lichtenberg, David Luban, Joseph MacKay, Josiah Ober, Umut Ozguc, Igor Primoratz, Neil Ramsey, David Stahel, and Scott Sagan. Most of all I am indebted to Cheyney Ryan for his detailed and erudite written feedback on an earlier draft. All of the usual disclaimers apply.
I owe thanks also to the McCoy Center for Ethics in Society at Stanford University, for hosting me as a visiting fellow while I finalised the manuscript in 2019, and to Peter Momtchiloff of Oxford University Press for his continued support and patience. Parts of Chapter 1 appeared previously in a special issue of Philosophical Forum (vol. 46, 2015), under the title “Punishing Non-Conscientious Disobedience: Is the Military a Rogue Employer?”. I thank the publisher of the journal for granting permission to reuse this material.
