Abstract
Chapter 1 reviews the definition and the origins of motivational interviewing (MI) and its role in medical practice. It also looks at the theoretical underpinnings and psychological theories that are associated with MI. This chapter reviews the practical reasons for incorporating MI in health care settings and its impact on behavior change.
