Abstract
This chapter explores the way in which the Bible was understood and preached by ministers in one of the many smaller religious sub-cultures of early nineteenth-century England: the high Calvinists. It focuses on a group of notable late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century high Calvinist dissenters and demonstrates that the Bible was central not just to their preaching but also to their political thinking and practical response to social problems. High Calvinism was often criticised throughout this period for preferring a ‘narrow theory of life’ and a complex theological system to the spirit of the Bible. Yet Scripture was central to the devotional lives and educational efforts of figures such as John Gill (1697-1771), William Huntington (1745-1813), William Gadsby (1773-1844), Joseph Irons (1785-1852) and James Wells (1803-72). Their powerful preaching was remarkable for its careful fidelity to Scripture and did not diverge significantly from other dissenters in their concern for urban poverty and injustice.
