Abstract
Ovid’s role in ancient scholarship remains an enigma since very few ancient scholia survive for his poems. In contrast, a substantial body of ancient scholia on Virgil has survived. These commentaries occasionally quote Ovid and so offer clues as to Ovid’s place in the tradition of Virgilian exegesis as well as in ancient scholarship more generally. Based on an examination of the handful of references to Ovid in Servius’ commentaries on Virgil, the author concludes that Servius, at least, was not well acquainted with the Ovidian corpus. Nevertheless, by comparing references to Ovid in other Virgilian scholia, it is possible to read many of the Ovidian citations in Servius as reflexes of earlier exegesis more attuned to Ovid’s own use of Virgil. The chapter proposes a model for how poetic citations might enter a commentary tradition and shift in meaning and emphasis over time.
