Let me take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to those who have influenced in various capacities the research that culminated in this book. Initial conceptualization of the project took shape as part of my doctoral research at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, between 2003 and 2009. I am heavily indebted to Dhruv Raina for his unconditional support and mentorship as my thesis supervisor. I am grateful for his unabated patience in grooming and disciplining me as a researcher, and for our deep friendship. He was also kind enough to write a foreword to the book. Rajeswari S. Raina and S. Irfan Habib also played important roles in shaping the work. Their intellectual and emotional support and friendship have been of great importance to me. Abhinav Raina grew up from a six-year-old into a college boy and musician in front of my eyes during the last thirteen years I spent on this project, and I thank him for his affection and music.
