Abstract
Chapter 2 examines some of the various and different approaches that have been used to classify and diagnose madness. Some of the historical background that has fed into the current classification systems will be briefly reviewed, but the current dominant systems, the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD), will be looked at in most detail. There are of course a range of criticisms of these approaches to classification, and of the whole idea of classification itself—we will also consider the “case formulation” approach that has been promoted in clinical psychology and has been used as an alternative.
