The Dr Jasbir Singh Saini Endowed Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies and the Religious Studies Department, University of California, Riverside, provided general financial support for the December 2008 international research seminar on ‘Sikhism in Global Context’ on which this book is based. This special event was organized in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the installation of the Guru Granth Sahib in 1708. The seminar sponsors included Dr Jasbir Singh Saini Trust and the Sikh Foundation of Palo Alto, California. Our department staff, Diana Marroquin, Veronica Quesada, and Stephanie Conde, gave assistance in organizing the event and helped with publicity.
I wish to thank June O’Connor, Chair of Religious Studies Department, for her help with last minute details of the programme. Stephen Cullenburg, Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS), showed special interest in this research seminar, and I thank him for his support and participation in the inaugural session. Narinder Singh Kapany, Chairman of Sikh Foundation of Palo Alto, Harkeerat Singh Dhillon and Saranjit Kaur Saini have contributed energetically in many ways to build the new program in Sikh Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Their selfless and untiring support is much appreciated. My doctoral students, Toby B. Johnson and Charles M. Townsend, assisted greatly with hospitality and other necessary arrangements for the seminar. A number of undergraduate Sikh students at the University assisted in various ways. I thank all of them for their timely help.
