Abstract
Chapter 12 discusses additional ways in which counterfactual reasoning is used to investigate explanatory relationships under determinism, and how it can be applied in the context of indeterminism. While the reconstruction of counterfactual reasoning in Chapter 11 assumes the transitivity of explanation, Chapter 12 shows that this controversial thesis is in fact dispensable. Whereas Chapters 10 and 11 explain why counterfactual dependence often provides good evidence for explanatory connections, Chapter 12 shows that the theory also predicts and explains those cases where explanation and counterfactual dependence come apart. That is a distinctive advantage of this account, which regards causation and explanation as more fundamental than counterfactuals, over many theories that rest on the opposite view.
