First of all, thanks to the team at Oxford University Press who encouraged me to take up this project. My research student Moumita gathered the files which I selected from various archives in India. Dr Narender Yadav informed me about the wealth of archival materials available at the Ministry of Defence’s Historical Section Library at New Delhi. I remain grateful to him for his advice. Special thanks to my friend Gavin Rand and our research assistant Jane who photocopied the relevant materials from various archives in Britain. Tim Moreman pointed out some odd references to me. I also thank Professor Peter Stanley who provided vital inputs on the Australian units in South-East Asia during 1941–2. Professors Jeremy Black and Ian Beckett, as usual, provided me with encouragement to pursue this project. Lastly, I thank my wife who, besides her professional duties, also took care of the ‘home front’ while I pored over the documents and typed incessantly. It goes without saying that I remain responsible for all the inaccuracies.
