Abstract
This chapter adds more information about the misls, starting with the events after the numerous Afghan invasions in India. While the Afghans and Marathas held certain territories in India, the Sikhs began distributing the territory between the Jumna and the Indus among themselves. The chapter also examines the contentious and expansionist phases of the misls in the Cis-Sutlej zone and the misls in the Trans-Sutlej zone separately. It then discusses briefly the looting that occurred in the villages across the Jumna, by a Sikh force twenty thousand strong. The Sikh-Rohilla alliance, the conflict between Najaf Khan and the Sikhs, and the breakup of the misls are discussed in this chapter as well. It notes that the Sikhs had a missed opportunity; while they were given the chance to seize Hindustan, they decided to cross the Ganges instead.
