There are three groups of people to whom thanks are due in connection with this book. The first are the people and institutions that aided me directly in the process of research and writing. On this list I include the Jewish Theological Seminary and its chancellor, Dr. Ismar Schorsch, who have been supportive and encouraging throughout. I am particularly grateful for the Stroock Fellowship that was granted me by the Seminary in the spring of 1994. Many colleagues read all or parts of the manuscript and made helpful comments, criticisms, and suggestions. They include Benjy Gampel, Bob Goldenberg, Richard Kalmin, David Kraemer, Seth Schwartz, and Devora Steinmetz. I would particularly like to thank Carol Bakhos for taking the time to read and critique my manuscript. Joanne Ginsberg was a major force in getting me to focus and organize my ideas, and she has my deep gratitude for her help. In 1997 I presented the thesis of this book at the conference of the Association for Jewish Studies; I am grateful for the reactions that I received from colleagues at that time. I also had the opportunity, in the fall of 1999, to read chapter 3 to a group of colleagues at a colloqium sponsored by the Talmud Department of the Jewish Theological Seminary; I heard much there that was helpful to me. The Fellows of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem heard me present part of the book's thesis in the spring of 2000, and I gained much from their remarks.
