Introduction: giving oral hygiene advice
While working as a dental nurse, you might be asked by the dentist to give a patient oral hygiene advice. The type of patient and their needs will determine the type of instructions you will need to give. For example, you might have to give advice to a child who has received a fixed appliance, an adult who has been fitted with a bridge, or an elderly person who has had a new partial denture made.
As a dental nurse, remember that you can only advise patients how to take the best care of their mouth. They might not take kindly to being told what to do.
A dental nurse can give the patient both verbal and written oral hygiene advice and also use models of the teeth and various oral hygiene aids to demonstrate these as well.
