During the years it has taken to complete this work I have moved from Germany, to the United States, and finally, to Canada. I have benefitted from many people, both academic and personal friends, across two continents, who supported and encouraged me to write this book. Some of these people have played a more formal role as mentor, whereas others lent their support by keeping my mind off the book when I was stuck (many of these people are probably unaware of how much they helped me). While it would be impossible to mention everyone who falls into the latter category, especially all the personal friends who have supported me during my research, data analysis, and when completing this book, I am thankful to all of you. I shall mention the most notable ones here: thanks to Matthias Schelwies for being my oldest friend and the one I can always turn to; to Miriam Philipp, Nina Voigt, and Kathrin Voigt for all your mental support throughout my data collection and for so many great moments; to Victoria Dadet for being the best room-mate ever throughout my data analysis; to Bettina Lotsch for one million conversations about academia and beyond over cheesecake; and to Arndt Krueger for his unwavering friendship and listening to my random thoughts about my research (and other things) at all times. Thank you for everything—I miss you all!
