Words don't just describe, They Create
Force which animates everything in the world:
“Indwelling Wind Spirit”
Capacity to shape wind=Act of Creativity
Thus the power of human word
Babies same category as animals until they talk
For this type of notation, I added the syntax necessary to tie the thoughts together. Other notes listed elements of a ritual ceremony, such as the following on the Ojibwa Medewewin ceremony:
Candidates: one who had been ill or
dreamed he should go through
Midé priest
Preparations—Gifts
Mi'gis worn by candidate
Wayan Med. otter bag
Preliminary instructions in Wigwam
Songs taught secrets of the Society
related to the 4 degrees
Sweat Bath
Joseph did not always write descriptions of each of these steps, since he knew them so well by heart. When this occurred, I would turn to Joseph's library for the books he had read and underlined so that I could fill in the details. In some of his notes, Joseph referred to stories he liked to tell during a lecture, such as the “Gopher story” or the “Black Hills Race Track story.” If I could not find a version of the story Joseph had written, I would ask former students to tell it to me. While it may seem that this process is one step removed from Joseph's work, it honors something he took very seriously: passing on knowledge through oral transmission.
