We are pleased to present this updated version of our award-winning volume. Thanks go to the editors who organized this update, and the many others who contributed to it. We also thank Timothy Walsh, who reviewed the entire volume and provided a new introduction to this edition.
We originally intended to release the volume in 2014, but with the introduction of the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013, we felt it wise to incorporate the changes that were made to that important resource. This volume takes note of those changes while also keeping a focus on the most recent advances in the treatment and prevention of common and difficult disorders of adolescence. We hope this updated volume continues to fulfill our aim of informing practitioners and researchers of the successes achieved and the challenges that remain in ensuring the well-being and health of the nation’s youth.
We wish to thank the Sunnylands Trust. It was the Trust’s generous funding and its president Leonore Annenberg’s vision that originally enabled the Annenberg Public Policy Center to organize the seven commissions that are represented in this volume. That commitment by Mrs. Annenberg and Sunnyland trustees Diana and Lee Deshong to furthering the mental and behavioral health of our youth inspires us as we continue this effort. In addition, to this volume, we have also released four trade books for parents and six for youth regarding best practices for treating and preventing many of the disorders discussed here. We plan on introducing new volumes in that series as well as updating the ones previously released.
Finally, we thank Oxford University Press, and in particular Joan Bossert and Lynnee Argabright, who coordinated the many activities that went into orchestrating this revision. It is their talents, perseverance, and good humor that brought forth the hundreds of pages in this new volume. We also note that this volume will be freely available online after one year, so that no barriers will stand in the way of its dissemination. We thank Oxford’s leadership for agreeing to this arrangement.
