The efforts of many have allowed this book to emerge, and I must start and end with thanks to Dr James Kelly who in the wake of the quadricentennial year of Milton's birth, convened a conference on the Young Milton at Worcester College, Oxford in March 2009. For that venue the essays comprising this collection took their earliest form, and I want to thank all of the contributors for their efforts in transforming work prepared for oral delivery into published form in a timely fashion. The support of Oxford University Press has been present from the start in the person of Jacqueline Baker who not only attended the conference but has offered solutions to both small and not so small matters that have come up during book production. Her colleagues Ariane Petit and Jenny Townshend helped me organize and prepare the volume for production with generosity and good will. Jo North, Albert Stewart, my production editor Brendan Mac Evilly, and production manager Veeralakshmy Sadayappan have made valuable suggestions and raised necessary questions that I would otherwise have overlooked. To all I am grateful. At my home university, I have been fortunate to have consistent support for my research from Professor Carol Moder, head of English, and Professor Peter Sherwood, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. No small thanks must go to Professor Paul Klemp for his careful reading of the entire manuscript (it is appreciably better as a result of his efforts) and Dr Joel Halcomb for astute decision making in compiling the index.
