Abstract
This chapter traces the untold story of German refugee scholar Paul Jacobsthal, as he came to Oxford under rather peculiar circumstances. Recent research on Jacobsthal by scholars based in England on the one hand, and Germany on the other, has led to very different accounts and assessments of him. The chapter traces a timeline of Jacobsthal’s movements, separating fact from fiction. It illustrates the difficulties of trying to depart from Germany without drawing attention to oneself, and the kind of subterfuge needed to prepare and achieve escape. It also reveals the length to which individuals on both sides of the Channel were prepared to go to help an eminent refugee, and the way personal loyalties could determine the future of refugees’ lives.
