The jacket of this book depicts the Lechaion Road in Corinth. The viewer looks south toward the Acrocorinth, with its temple of Demeter and Kore, where defixiones or binding spells were found, some of which targeted a female garland-weaver, Karpimē Babbia. Closer in, at the top of the stairs, lies the Roman Forum, where we find evidence of ancient liberti or freed slaves, as well as evidence of veneration of the Roman imperial family. In the foreground, to the right and left, lie halls and likely the makellon or marketplace for meat and other provisions. It’s a clear day, blue sky, sun shedding light on the ancient Mediterranean. There is no transparent window onto antiquity. But we can clearly see the movements of women, slaves and former slaves, workers, and others in the cities that held the ekklēsiai or assemblies to which Paul and his companions wrote.
The photograph was taken during one of the seminars that I conduct every other year, and particularly sweet to me is the memory of all the students with whom I’ve traveled, who are excised from the pictures so that the sites themselves become more legible. If they are invisible in the photographs in this book, their voices are still there, whether in my head as I wrote, or in my footnotes as I cite their work. My students’ questions inspire my research; our conversations on archaeological sites, with invited colleagues, on buses, over meals, and back home in the classroom are intellectually invigorating (and puzzling) and help to create a great cacophonous ekklēsia or assembly of deliberative debate and the upbuilding of academic community.
