Abstract
Paul’s enumeration of faith, hope, and love (charity) led Christian theologians to speculate about the roles played by and interconnections among the three. This chapter examines the contributions of Augustine, Luther, and Aquinas, especially with respect to hope. One issue that arises is whether hope for salvation is always hope primarily for oneself, with others included only if one is related to them by ties of love. Luther’s Lectures on Romans presents an account of pure love of God alone that can be achieved only by hatred of oneself, a hatred that is inimical to one’s hope for salvation. Luther’s account is defended against some criticisms but is ultimately rejected on grounds that without hope there can be no charity. The chapter concludes with an examination of Aquinas’s view that faith, hope, and charity are theological virtues necessary for achieving beatitude, with hope steering a course between despair and presumption.
