Abstract

Non-physical treatments in the functional psychoses are related to research on their social and psychological determinants. The literature on psychosocial stress, including that measured by Expressed Emotion, and on psychological abnormalities in schizophrenia is reviewed. Treatments based both on social and psychological findings have been developed, but social interventions seem better suited to use in routine practice.

The social correlates of affective disturbance are well established only for the more minor conditions, which have also been the target for most psychological research. This work is reviewed, but can be applied only with reservation to severe affective disorders. Non-physical methods of treatment have likewise been developed mainly with moderate depressions, although cognitive therapy may have a prophylactic function in severe disorders. Finally suggestions are made for the selection of available treatments for routine practice.
