This is the third, and updated, edition of a text first published in 1990. It is as relevant and topical now as it was then. It is a fitting tribute to Veronica Coulshed, who died soon after completing the original text. The text maintains its relevance, as it has been well up-dated, but also because the messages in the original text continue to be important today.

There are several types of management books. There are the inspiring and motivating books such as Harvey-Jones (1988) and Welch (2001), often focused on the biographies of successful (sometimes almost too perfectly described) business leaders. There are the research-based books, such as Collins (2001, 2006), distilling the lessons from organizational success and failure, presenting a picture of good management and leadership practices, and this would include the Joint Review Team’s findings on organizational cultures within social services departments (Joint Review Team, undated). There are the more theory- and model-based books, such as Goleman (2002), helping the conceptual understanding of management and leadership behaviours. And there are overview books, scanning other management writings and seeking to present succinctly an account of the current state of knowledge.
