Call for Papers: Artificial Intelligence in Biology and Bioinformatics
Biology Methods and Protocols (BIOMAP) invites contributions to an ongoing collection: Artificial Intelligence in Biology and Bioinformatics.
Advanced machine-learning systems, such as deep neural networks, are revolutionizing many scientific disciplines as well as our daily lives. The biological sciences have been a fruitful testing ground for the application of these systems for two main reasons. On the one hand, modern biology is characterized by the generation of large amounts of data, which is beneficial for these data-hungry systems whose performance depends on the availability of large training sets. On the other hand, the intrinsic complexity of biological systems and only partial understanding of underlying mechanisms preclude a modelling based on first principles. As a result, the association of the “inputs” and “outputs” of machine-learning systems, which learn from training data without awareness of underlying mechanisms, offers enormous potential for biological systems modelling.
The objective of this collection on “Artificial Intelligence in Biology and Bioinformatics” is to provide an overview of the current landscape of the application of advanced machine-learning techniques in these disciplines, providing the reader with insights not only on the state-of-the-art but on the future potential of these technologies as well.
