Recognizing Hispanic Authors in ASJ and
ASJ Open Forum
It is my honor to serve as the guest editor for a special collection of ASJ and ASJ Open Forum articles authored by Hispanic authors from around the world. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2020, it gives us a moment to pause and recognize how the Hispanic Culture has helped to shape our specialty. These influences include art, fashion, and ultimately aesthetic ideals. All of us have experienced an increased volume of Hispanic patients seeking aesthetic procedures, all with their own particular concerns and expectations.
The Aesthetic Society has had the privilege of being led by great Hispanic leaders, such as, Dr. Gustavo Colon, Julio Garcia and Laurie Casas. In my career, I have witnessed the increased acceptance of my Hispanic colleagues and the emergence of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS)—catering to our colleagues globally. As our world becomes smaller and more connected with technology, many of us now have friends throughout the world. The sharing of ideas and concepts are is so important to the growth of our specialty. The following articles demonstrate the value and contributions of our Hispanic colleagues on topics such as gluteal augmentation, lipoabdominoplasty, labiabplasty, fat treatment, mammaplasty, facial injections, otoplasty, COVID-19 and pandemic-related considerations, and more. They also demonstrate that our Society and Journal are made stronger by their dedication to diversity and inclusion, a quality that makes these organizations leaders in the specialty.
