Paedomorphic metaxylem tracheids with simplified Psilophyton-type pitting (center) in the actinostele of the Early Devonian (c. 400 million-year old) euphyllophyte Leptocentroxyla tetrarcha are surrounded by tracheids with typical Psilophyton-type pitting (left and right). These paedomorphic tracheids support a hypothesis for the origin of the pith by delaying and shortening the duration of differentiation of protoxylem tracheids [see Tomescu et al., 785–798].
