Cover illustration: The inset cover image shows stolons of wild strawberry, Fragaria vesca, growing away from the parent plant. In a patchy habitat, clonal plants may adopt different strategies with regard to investing biomass for growth across patch boundaries in search of new, resource-rich areas to invade. Sharp transitions between optimal strategies can exist depending on the spatial distribution of resource-rich and resource-poor patches. See Oborny and Hubai (pp. 389-398).
