Cover illustration: The inset cover image shows a grasshopper feeding on a leaf of common cocklebur, Xanthium strumarium, with superimposed diagrams of cis- and trans-fused sesquiterpene lactones. These compounds belong to a broadly distributed class of secondary metabolites implicated in plant defence. Subtle differences in the stereochemistry of such compounds may be a major determinant of the protective role of secondary metabolites and thus of plant fitness. See Ahern and Whitney (pp. 731-740).
