An insecticide study was conducted in Starkville, MS, at the R. R. Foil Experiment Station to evaluated insecticide efficacy on sugarcane aphids (SCA) in grain sorghum. This field study was implemented as a randomized complete block design with four replications planted on 29 May 2020. Plot size was four rows by 40 ft long on 38-inch centers. Five insecticides treatments were evaluated against an untreated control. Two treatments were applicated in-furrow at planting. In-furrow applications were applied through an 8001 flat fan nozzle at 5 gpa with nozzle oriented to spray in the seed furrow. The foliar insecticides were applied on 15 Jul with a tractor-mounted sprayer calibrated to deliver 10.0 gpa at 60 psi through TX-6 Hollow Cone nozzles (2 per row) when sugarcane were present. Samples were taken 7 and 11 days after treatment (DAT). A visual estimation of SCA was made on the lowest mature leaf on each of the 15 plants sampled. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means were separated using Fisher’s Protected LSD (P ≤ 0.05).
While there was no significant difference among treatments at the first two rating dates (47 DAP and 52 DAP), all treatments resulted in no SCA compared to the untreated control by 56 DAP (Table 1). All treatments that provided some control of SCA resulted in higher yields than the untreated control.1
