Migraine is a debilitating headache disorder and one of the leading causes of years lived with disability worldwide.1 In the US, migraine affects nearly 1 in 6 individuals, with about twice as many women affected as men.2 This disorder has been identified as a public health issue as headaches rank among the top 5 reasons for an emergency department visit.2 Patients with migraine have been shown to have higher direct (eg, healthcare visits, pharmaceutical utilization) and indirect (eg, absenteeism, short- and long-term disability) costs than their peers without migraine,3-5 which imposes a significant cost burden on the individuals affected, their employers, and the US healthcare system overall. Implementing strategies to manage healthcare utilization and costs (eg, optimizing the use of preventive treatment to reduce emergency department visits) can help alleviate this burden. However, due to the high volume of patients with migraine and limited provider resources, clinicians struggle to support this population.
