Again this year, the January 15 issue of AJHP includes the ASHP/ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Forecast report.1 Since its first release in 2012, the Pharmacy Forecast has aimed to heighten awareness of trends in healthcare that will affect the pharmacy enterprise and influence health-system pharmacy’s future directions.2 Continuing this tradition, the 2024 report addresses public health, the mental health crisis, equity in healthcare, new disease paradigms and treatment innovations, workforce issues, and artificial intelligence.
While historically the Pharmacy Forecast has always focused on some of the most predominant topics in healthcare, the 2024 report takes this to a different level by tackling issues with even broader societal implications. As DiPiro and Hoffman emphasize in their introduction, the 2024 topics “exceed the boundaries of traditional themes about pharmacy services.” This reflects the profound societal changes that are influencing healthcare delivery and the evolution of the Forecast report itself.
Of the 46 survey items included in the 2024 report, there were 16 scenarios that 70% or more of the respondents indicated were somewhat or very likely to occur. These focused on some of the most complex issues affecting the US healthcare system, including adolescent substance use disorders, government investment in programs to reduce health disparities, and the influence of ultra-high-cost drugs on services provided by hospitals.
